Guan’s Kopitiam is one of those rare cafes that win you over from start to finish. Especially when the majority of their patrons are regulars.
From their orderly queuing system to the quick service and mouthwatering good food,
Guan’s is impeccable and garners repeat visits.
Is Guan’s possibly one of the best cafes in Petaling Jaya? You bet and it’s on my culinary radar. Check out what makes Guan’s café a standout offering delicious fusion food that lingers with good memories.
About Guan’s Kopitiam
Opening its doors in July 2022, Guan’s Kopitiam is a contemporary café serving local Kopitiam food and Western dishes.
From mamak-stall favorites like Mee Siam, and mee goreng, to all-time favorites like nasi lemak, flaky croissants, and pasta. Their crowd-pleasing menu ensures that you’ll find something to whet your appetite.
Guan’s Kopitiam also serves a good mix of traditional and modern coffee, with their local beans sourced from Sabah.
Apart from their bustling café at Taman Rasa Sayang, Guan’s Kopitiam’s footprint transcends the peninsular. In fact, they have 2 outlets in Sabah, where you’ll find Guan’s Kopitiam at Sutera Avenue and Gaya Street.
Accessibility
There is no public transport that stops near Guan’s Café.
Your closest bet is to ride the LRT and disembark at Kelana Jaya. From there, it’s a 15-minute walk to reach Guan’s Kopitiam.
As such, you’re better off driving here or hailing a ride-sharing car.
Parking
Street parking is available in front of the café and along the main road.
During lunchtime, parking is insufficient and you may have to park inside the housing area.
Ambiance
Guan’s café boasts sleek and modern aesthetics with good ventilation and bright lights.
The café is divided into 2 sections: indoor dining with air conditioning and outdoor seating with strong fans that keep you cool.
The utilitarian exposed wall creates a nice contrast against the polished white marble tables and counters.
Its centerpiece is none other than the open-coffee bar concept, where coffee baristas showcase their prowess while stirring up some of the best coffees in Petaling Jaya.
Service at Guan’s Cafe
Helmed by a young and energetic crew unfazed by the crowd, the service here is impressive and efficient.
Their crowd management works like an oiled engine where a greeter jots down your name and number of diners. Depending on your seating preference, guests need not wait long despite the long queue that swells from 11 am onwards.
Guan’s Kopitiam does not limit how long you can dine inside. Neither do they attempt to clear our table multiple times. Instead, guests are allowed to savor their meal in peace.
The cutleries were served hot - a sign that Guan’s Café upholds steep hygiene standards.
Food at Guan’s Kopitiam
Nasi lemak fans will be spoilt for choice with good variations. The Nasi Lemak Fried Chicken is delicious, thanks to its sweetish and savory sambal that bodes well with children.
The crunchy fried chicken retains juiciness on the inside, making it a real treat with coconut milk-infused rice and condiments.
The Mee Siam is another winner that’s flavorful and spicy. The Sambal Sotong (squid in chili paste) was well-cooked, tender and the sauce is tasty with refreshing hints of lemon grass and lime.
Mum did not want too much sambal on her plate and requested for the squid to be separated. But she cleaned the whole plate eventually.
The croissants here are to die for, and the Mushroom Cheese Croissant did not disappoint.
The flaky pastry layers with nuances of delightful butter is a match made in heaven. The sautéed shitake mushroom with herbs can do with less salt. But the croissant made the dish divine.
The Pomodoro Pappardelle Pasta with Crispy Squid is coated with delicious tomato-based sauce while the squid adds a nice texture to the dish.
Their rendition of Mee Mamak transports you to its authentic roots dished up by your regular mamak. Only this time it’s less oily, bursting with flavors and topped with juicy fat prawns and spring onions.
The Classic Kaya Butter Toast with screw pine infused paste (kaya), plus melt-in-your mouth Anchor butter is simply divine.
As for their drinks, their classic hand-brew traditional coffee has a nice buttery taste with robust undertones.
Pricing
With an average price of RM20 per dish, our lunch for 4 pax (including a jar of cookies at RM20) costs just above RM100. Considering the quality of ingredients used and serving sizes, the price of food here is reasonable and worth every penny.
Verdict
There’s something about the food at Guan’s Kopitiam that makes it so memorable that you’ll want to come back for more. Perhaps it’s the way it was cooked, how long it was fried, the marinating, spices used, or just acute attention to detail.
Not forgetting the flawless and attentive service, it’s hard to find fault with Guan’s Kopitiam.
